The Modern Masters Tapestries is honored to present “Ciel de vent” (Wind Sky), a magnificent wool tapestry by Atelier 3, from an artwork of the esteemed artist Huguette Arthur Bertrand.
Bertrand’s artistic style drew inspiration from the automatic writings of the Surrealist movement, championed by André Breton. This technique emphasized expressing the subconscious, bypassing conscious control. Her paintings aimed to capture a “pure reality,” unburdened by the constraints of the physical world.
The result was a body of work characterized by emphatic expression. Bertrand didn’t depict objects or scenes; instead, her canvases pulsated with energy through vigorous brushstrokes, a rich use of color, and a focus on gesture. This approach aligned with Tachism (a European form of Abstract Expressionism) and Art Informel (art that rejected categorization). -
