Rene Perrot’s tapestry “Les Trois Faisans” (Three pheasants) is a breathtaking work of art that encapsulates the creative vision and unique artistic expression of this renowned artist.
Rene Perrot is widely recognized for his approximately 400 original tapestry cartoons, frequently woven in multiple copies at Felletin, Aubusson, or Gobelins, commissioned by both government and private entities. Alongside Jean Lurçat, twenty years his senior, he played a pivotal role in revitalizing this art form.
In 1945, he was appointed artistic consultant to the Rivière des Borderies factory (later the Pinton factory), which he significantly contributed to reviving and revitalizing through close collaboration with the Basse Lice workshops in Creuse. In 1946, he participated in the exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art, “French Tapestry from the Middle Ages to the Present Day,” alongside artists older than him: Lurçat, Picard le Doux, Saint Saëns, and Dom Robert. He persuaded his friend Manessier, a former member of Jeune France, to create a tapestry cartoon, “The Construction of the Arche,” woven in Felletin, providing employment for weavers.
In 1947, when the “Association of Cardboard Painters-France” was founded, he joined and primarily focused on tapestry. He embraced the new conventions: crafting cartoons drawn at the actual dimensions of the woven work, employing numbering corresponding to a precise charter of color ranges bound in a string, and significantly reducing the chromatic palette. His inspiration stems from the fauna, flora, or seabed, which he meticulously observes, as evidenced by the numerous drawings and documentary studies of the animal, plant, or mineral world. The vibrant colors of the backgrounds or subjects are instantly recognizable; the poetic universe of his works, sometimes influenced by medieval mille-fleurs, is unique.
His tapestries and rugs adorn the homes of numerous enthusiasts and private collectors, museums, and major corporations, including JP Morgan and Air France. In 1967, he decorated the first class of the Boeing 707 for Air France, and the lounges of JFK airport in New York with three monumental hangings covering nearly 30 square meters. -
