Modern Masters Tapestries proudly presents “Lumière sur l’Inconnu” (Light on the Unknown), a breathtaking tapestry by Mathieu Matégot. This masterpiece embodies his artistic genius and celebrates his lasting influence on the design world.
Mathieu Matégot: A Visionary Artist
Matégot, born in Hungary in 1910, honed his artistic talents at the Budapest School of Fine Arts. He then embarked on journeys through Italy and the United States, further enriching his creative perspective. While initially drawn to painting, Matégot’s career flourished in various design fields. He worked as a shopkeeper, decorator, and even a fashion stylist, showcasing his versatility and passion for creativity.
A Pioneer in Modern Tapestry
By the late 1930s, Matégot embraced a new artistic medium: tapestry. He eventually transitioned fully to tapestries in 1959, becoming a pioneer in the French modern tapestry movement.
Matégot’s Enduring Legacy
Matégot’s tapestries remain strikingly contemporary, characterized by bold, saturated colors against dark backgrounds. His dynamic lines and abstract compositions echo the influence of artistic giants like Picasso and Braque. Today, his works grace prestigious buildings worldwide, from the Bank of International Settlements to the National Library of Australia, where they continue to captivate viewers. -
