1980 Jasper Johns Whitney Museum 50th Anniversary Poster
-
Description
- Created as part of his Two Flags series for the Whitney Museum of Art's 50th anniversary celebration in 1980, this rare and limited edition lithograph by Jasper Johns is a graphic masterpiece that brilliantly showcases the hallmarks of the legendary artist's work: repetition, perception, and ambiguity.
- Johns has played a central role in contemporary American art since the 1950's, producing exceptional paintings, drawings, and prints. He began to work in lithography in 1960 and the practice has remained an important part of his creative output. This high quality lithograph was printed by Gemini G.E.L. in a limited edition. Though a print, this work has a painterly quality due to the artist's use of encaustic, a mixture of pigment in warm wax that congeals as each stroke is applied. Johns noted that the flag, like the other iconic images he depicted– targets, maps, and letters– was "seen and not looked at, not examined." This technique draws attention to the process of its making and also invites close inspection by the viewer.
- Newly re-matted, this piece has been framed in a custom oak frame under UV- resistant plexi. There is a slight waviness at the bottom of the print. Please see our detailed photos. -
