Description
Large German KPM style porcelain plaque of a tavern scene
German, 20th Century
Plaque: Height 26cm, width 40cm
Frame: Height 41cm, width 55.5cm, depth 5.5cm
This exquisite porcelain plaque, inspired by the renowned German manufactory KPM, presents a vivid and energetic tavern scene. Painted in a rich and dynamic colour palette, it brings to life the bustling atmosphere of a 17th century tavern.
The composition is filled with engaging details - peasants drink, converse, and embrace, while a female attendant tends to the fire on the right. Overturned chairs, scattered foliage, and toppled vessels emphasize the commotion of the setting. People of various ages are depicted, including a mother in the foreground gently holding her baby.
Executed in the manner of David Teniers the Younger (1610–1690), a master of 17th century peasant genre painting, this work echoes his signature style. Teniers was celebrated for his depictions of rural life, often capturing the vibrancy of taverns and village gatherings.
The plaque bears the signature ‘n. Teniers’, indicating it was created in homage to the esteemed artist (‘nach’ Teniers). The reverse features a spurious KPM mark along with an ‘F’.
This beautiful plaque is a superb piece for collectors of historical porcelain and European art. - More Information
