Description
Set of twelve antique Chinese pith paintings with flowers and butterflies
Chinese, 19th Century
Height 33cm, width 38cm, depth 1.5cm
This delightful collection of paintings is crafted on pith paper. Notably low in absorbency, this medium allows the paint to pool on the surface, resembling enamel and forming raised areas of colour.
Each piece is vibrantly rendered, showcasing an opulent arrangement of flowers, foliage, and butterflies. The choice of flowers carries profound significance in Chinese culture. For instance, peonies, often regarded as the ‘king of flowers’, symbolise wealth and peace, as well as a connection to royalty.
Among the lush floral designs, butterflies of various sizes are elegantly interspersed. Their wings are meticulously painted with intricate details, creating a striking contrast against the vibrant blooms.
Encased in burgundy frames, each painting is further enhanced by pierced metal accents along the edges, complemented by gilt and paper decorations. These are a later addition.
This impressive collection would serve as a stunning addition to both modern and traditional interiors, bringing a touch of artistry and cultural richness to any space. - More Information
