French 19th Century Carpenter’s Workbench
-
Description
This French 19th century workbench is a fascinating relic of technology from before the assembly line, a hybrid of artisanal rusticity and industrial innovations. The top planks are impossibly thick, patinated by saws and hand tools necessary to the carpenter’s craft, punctured with five holes to adjust a “holdfast” iron rod for securing a project to the table. Four variably sized and roughly hewn legs support the top and a trough-like lower shelf. A large vise grip projects from the left leg, opening by a wood-handled crank to unscrew the bolt–a potentially useful feature should one want to repurpose this piece as a console table for an entryway. The awe-inspiring workbench appeals to multiple design tastes, from brutalism to industrial to primitive for its charming imperfections. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, ready for your interior. Please view the detailed images.
