Description
Pair of large jewel-toned painted porcelain vases by Royal Vienna
Austrian, Late 19th Century
Height 80cm, width 38cm, depth 27cm
These exquisite Royal Vienna porcelain vases date back to the late 19th century and are crafted by one of Europe’s oldest and most esteemed porcelain manufacturers. Established in 1718, the Royal Vienna Porcelain Manufactory gained prestige as the official porcelain supplier to Emperor Karl VI (1685–1740).
Their distinctive shape sets them apart from the manufactory’s typical style, making them rare and highly desirable pieces. The deep blue background is adorned with intricate gilded patterns, reflecting classical influences. A striking feature are the sculpted heads of Pan, the Greek god of the wild, which replaces traditional handles on either side.
Each vase showcases two masterfully painted historical scenes, including Eleanor of Castile and Edward I, Hermann the Cheruscan, Vortigern and Rowena, and Elizabeth Woodville and Edward IV. These detailed compositions are enriched by a vibrant jewel-toned palette and elegantly inscribed titles.
The base mirrors the opulent gilded detailing found throughout, incorporating subtle mythological motifs. Topping each vase is a porcelain lid, crowned with a gilded pinecone finial.
On the underside, the signature blue beehive mark of Royal Vienna confirms their authenticity, while the paintings bear the artist’s signature, ‘Knoellez’.
With their exceptional craftsmanship, striking design, and rich historical references, these vases are a remarkable addition to any fine European porcelain collection.
