View of New York

  • Description
German-American artist Ferdinand Kaufmann is remembered for his detailed marine paintings and Southern California landscapes. Today, we present this historical painting “A View of New York Harbor”, which is filled with motion, action, choppy waters, and many signs of the American Industrial Revolution. We can see the agrarian age waning, while the modern, manufacturing age rises before our eyes. The factories fill the sky with smoke, and the harbor is busy and full of cargo ships, tugboats, fishing boats, and ferries. The stormy weather and fast moving clouds enhance the feeling of imminent change as they announce the inevitable transformation of the American economy and way of life, ushering us into a new era.
