Description
Collection of framed antique Italian plaster intaglios
Italian, Early 19th Century
Height 34cm, width 34cm, depth 4cm
This exquisite collection of eighteen plaster intaglios was crafted in Italy in the early 19th century. Each finely cast piece showcases detailed busts of notable historical and mythological figures from antiquity, including the Gorgon, Jupiter, and Mars.
Arranged in a refined circular composition, the intaglios stand out against a deep black card background, enhancing their crisp white detailing. A bold purple card border adds contrast, while the wooden frame is finished with a luxurious, marbleised resin lacquer,
Plaster intaglios were highly sought-after souvenirs during the Grand Tour, a cultural journey undertaken by young European noblemen in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Travelling through historic sites, they aimed to deepen their understanding of classical art and architecture while cultivating a taste for neoclassical design.
This fine collection is a striking decorative piece for any neoclassical art collection. -
