Description
Mineral pigments on gold leaf with silk brocade border and lacquer trim. Japan; 17th century. 58 1/4"h. x 134 1/2'w. x 3/4"d. From the collection of Susan Wallach and Eykyn Maclean. Leopards and tigers are not native to Japan so artists, never having actually seen these animals, other than drawings and pelts, were under the misconception that spotted leopards were female tigers and striped tigers were males.
