Rare Gorham Victorian Sterling Silver Octopus Chatelaine 1887

$ 6,650
  • Description
    Rare sterling silver chatelaine. Made by Gorham in Providence in 1887. In form of octopus with acid-etched bumpy, scaly skin and slightly scary beady red glass eyes. Entwined scrolling legs hung with chained cutout fishes. A one-of-a-kind piece that packs a symbolic wallop by evoking the Victorian lady’s tentacular family relations and bountiful fertility—though not so bountiful as the octopus, which can give birth to thousands of hatchlings in one go. Fully marked including maker’s stamp, date symbol, and no. 145. Very good condition with deep patina.
