A Pair of Oak and Mohair Art Deco Armchairs, Europe 20th Century

$ 13,300
  • Description
    Art Deco furniture design reveals a unique era of craftsmanship and style that remains influential to the present day. European furniture makers embraced this style and in the years between the World Wars, and created pieces with bold geometric shapes, rich materials, and luxurious aesthetics. The era was a testament to the fusion of form and function which is beautifully exemplified in this pair of exquisite armchairs.

    Comfort and style were evidently prioritized in this pair with large, curved proportions that serve both aesthetic and functional roles. While early 20th century designs often made use of heavier ornamentation, this pair is much more pared down. These armchairs feature a welcoming curved back with round edges that are echoed in the arms as well. The elegant organic lines of the design create a striking silhouette. Not neglecting functionality, the generous proportions and luxurious upholstery provide great sitting comfort. The frames have distinct, so-called wings in the top that give the impression that the chairs are ready to embrace the sitter. The solid oak legs offer gentle contrast to the mohair fabric; the robust shape of the front legs provides a sense of stability and durability, while the back legs are tapered and slightly slimmer, the splayed construction further ensures structural support for the bodies. Moreover, the differing leg shapes add visual interest to the design as well, breaking the otherwise symmetrical lines of the body. The duality of the two materials and colour scheme create an elegant, self-supporting, and enticingly functional design.

    The Art Deco style has not been frozen in time. Rather, it has evolved to suit contemporary tastes. Like this pair, Art Deco pieces are made using high-quality materials and advanced manufacturing techniques, thus offering a perfect fusion of past and present. These armchairs are an elegant way to add a touch of retro-chic to any contemporary interior.
