Description
Antique German Orientalist oil painting of an Egyptian temple by Meyerheim
German, 1893
Canvas: Height 42.5cm, width 54cm
Frame: Height 67cm, width 79cm, depth 7cm
Presented in an intricately carved giltwood frame, this exquisite oil on canvas painting captures a striking scene of two Egyptian women walking through the historic ruins of Luxor Temple. Located on the east bank of the Nile River, Luxor Temple is one of Egypt’s most renowned temple complexes, steeped in ancient history. The orientalist theme is unusual for the artist, German-born Paul Friedrich Meyerheim (1842-1915), who is best-known for his animal paintings.
The painting is a deft study of contrast; the distinction between the bright blue sky and the shade of the temple creating an appealing sense of depth. Rather than overpowering the canvas, the shadows of the composition are refreshingly rendered in gentle brushstrokes of blue and white, emphasising the tranquillity of the scene. From the wispy white clouds to the figures traversing the distant valley, Meyerheim’s delicate handling of paint has captured a lush and vivid scene.
A prominent member of the Prussian Academy of Arts, Meyerheim became a professor and Academic Senate member in 1887, establishing a distinguished career specialising in zoo animals, circus scenes, portraits, and landscapes. This painting stands as a testament to his versatility and artistic finesse.
The artwork is signed ‘P. Mayerheim’ in the lower left corner, while an inscription on the column to the right reads ‘PM, Luxor, 5.2.1893’.
With its vibrant colour palette, historical significance, and expert craftsmanship, this piece is a remarkable addition to any fine art collection, particularly for collectors of orientalist paintings, 19th-century European art, or Egyptian-themed artworks.
