Description
Pair of antique English majolica pedestals by Wedgwood
English, 1877
Height 86cm, diameter 40cm
This magnificent pair of Wedgwood majolica pedestals, crafted in 1877, showcases the brand’s renowned expertise in fine ceramics. Established in 1759, Wedgwood became celebrated for producing a wide array of high-quality wares, including majolica - a vividly glazed tin-earthenware introduced to its workshops around 1860.
Designed to make a statement, these pedestals feature round, multi-coloured tops, ideal for displaying decorative objects. Beneath the surface, a beautifully moulded frieze encircles each piece, adorned with intricate grapevine motifs and abundant clusters of fruit. The central portion is distinguished by a striking cobalt glaze, which contrasts elegantly with the richly ornamented sides. Majestic panther masks serve as striking embellishments, linking the sculpted fruiting vine swags, while beneath them, delicate ribbon-tied floral arrangements enhance the overall refinement. At the centre, ribbon-bound intaglio profile portraits stand out in bold, contrasting hues, further emphasizing the pedestals’ intricate detailing. The bases are stepped, adding an element of grandeur and stability.
Glazed in a vibrant palette of green, amber, turquoise, and cobalt - colours traditionally associated with the historic art of majolica - these pedestals exemplify Wedgwood’s exceptional artistry and craftsmanship.
The pieces are stamped ‘WEDGWOOD’ along with the markings ‘EWF’ and ‘BNF’, which follow the company’s three-letter dating system, confirming their production in 1877.
Blending exquisite design with historical significance, this distinguished pair of pedestals is a remarkable addition to one’s interior.
