    19th century marquetry inlaid Japanese Game table, top unfolds to reveal extraordinary inlay of exotic hardwoods from the Hakone forest, the front is a series of drawers and cabinet doors with Yosegi Zaiku inlay work, the upper box sits on an ebonized base with box stretchers. “Yosegi-zaiku” is the term used for the traditional Japanese marquetry technique which originated during Japan’s Edo period. Using different grains, colours and textures of wood, mosaic designs are made, most famously for Japanese puzzle “trick boxes” but also for other decorative items. Japanese Edo Period, circa 1860.
