Marco Zanuso, Pair of "Senior" armchairs, 1951. New Luxury Mohair upholstery

$ 17,600
  • Description
    Exceptional pair of 'Senior' lounge armchairs designed by Marco Zanuso in 1951 for Arflex, Milano. The "Senior" armchair was the more commodious big brother to Zanuso's equally iconic and beautiful 'lady' chair and both designs complement each other perfectly.

    The Lady chair was presented this same year at the 9th Milano Triennial, where he won the gold medal. This armchair is the icon of modernity and the result of an important technical and material innovation that will invert the traditional working system of each element by producing them separately and assembling them.

    Original piece from the 1950s newly re-upholstered, we used a luxury fine quality 100% Mohair fabric.
    We can particularly appreciate the work and savoir-faire of our team of upholsterers respecting the original design, using the right proportions and lines as it was designed in the 50's.
    Varnished Brass feet.
    Arflex Manufacturer label under the seat.

    Exceptional and Excellent condition.

    Literature:
    Repertorio del Design Italiano 1950-2000, p. 25, illustrated.
    Domus' Cover January 1953 issue was devoted to Zanuso's 'Lady' and 'Senior' chairs.

    Marco Zanuso (Milan, Italy 1916 – 2001) was part of a group of Italian designers from Milan, shaping the international idea of "good design" in the postwar years. Trained in architecture at the Politecnico di Milano University, he opened his design office in 1945. He was the editor at the DOMUS Magazine. As well as being a professor of architecture, design and town planning at the Politecnico from the late 1940s until the 1980s, he was also one of the founding members of the ADI in the 1950s, distinctly influencing the next design generation in Italy. In 1957 Zanuso partnered with German designer Richard Sapper, both working together on many projects after that, including for Brionvega and Siemens. Zanuso received gold medals for designs such as the LADY CHAIR, SLEEP-O-MATIC and TRIPOLTRONA.
