  • Description
Standing Horse American School,19th Century. polychromed wood. Height 24 ½ in. by Length 26in. Circa 1880. Provenance: James Kronen, New York; Kennedy Galleries, New York; Marvel Collection, White Plains, New York; Ricco Maresca, New York. The important American Folk Art Collection of David Teiger. Literature: The Kennedy Quarterly, vol. XIII, no. 1, january 1974; Tom Geismar and Harvey Kahn, Spiritually Moving; A Collection of American Folk Art Sculpture (New York: Harry N. Abrams,1998) cat.no. 25,illus. in color. The form and function of this remarkable horse are as mysterious as they are evocative. It may have been used as trade sign or perhaps a decorative architectural element or even a toy. Regardless of its original purpose, it is an outstanding stylization reminiscent of work produced on other times and places, such as Oriental or Etruscan sculpture.
