Sam Francis
American, 1923 - 1994
Sam Francis was an American abstract expressionist painter and printmaker. Born in San Mateo, California in 1923, Francis was influenced by his artistic parents and began to paint at an early age. He studied broadly, attending the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. After serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, Francis moved to Paris and subsequently developed a style that combined elements of Abstract Expressionism, Color Field Painting, and Lyrical Abstraction. Francis' paintings and prints can be found in major collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He died in Santa Monica, California in 1994.
