Artist Bio: Suzanne Unrein
Born in 1974 in Sacramento, California, Suzanne Unrein grew up in the vibrant coastal towns of Florida, surrounded by swamps, alligators, mossy oaks, and a rich variety of birdlife. Currently based in New York City, her artwork has gained recognition through exhibitions in galleries and museums across the United States, including solo shows at Rare Gallery in NYC, as well as in Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, and the Hamptons.
Unrein’s work has been featured in The Oxford Handbook of Perceptual Organization (Oxford University Press) and was the subject of the short film Hands & Eyes, which premiered at the Hamptons International Film Festival. In addition to her artistic practice, she serves as the art editor for Figure/Ground magazine and contributes to Delicious Line. Her inaugural curatorial project, Afflatus, was showcased at the 5-50 Gallery in Long Island City in May, co-curated with Amy Hill.
Throughout her career, Unrein has participated in several prestigious residencies and fellowships, including the Studio Program at P.S. 122 in the East Village, the ESKFF residency in Jersey City, NJ, the Jentel Fellowship in Banner, WY, and the Can Serrat residency in Le Bruc, Barcelona, Spain. Currently, she works in her studio in the East Village, New York.
Her artwork is characterized by the dynamic energy of gestural mark-making and bold, vibrant colors, creating lyrical representations of a wilder existence. Unrein expresses joy and sensuality through a contemporary approach to paint, crafting complex emotional compositions that emerge from the subconscious rather than a purely analytical process.
In 2023, she was awarded the FST StudioProjects Fund grant and is currently a recipient of the studio program residency at Painting Space 122 in New York. Her work is held in the public collections of institutions such as Andromeda Advantage in Long Island City, the Eileen S. Kaminsky Family Foundation in Jersey City, the U.S. Embassy in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Fish & Game in Hudson, NY, and The Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary in Pretoria, South Africa.
Unrein earned her Bachelor of Design from the University of Florida in Gainesville and continues to inspire audiences with her vivid artistic vision.
