Jean Perzel
French, 1892
Jean Perzel (1892-1986) was a French designer and craftsman who is best known for his innovative lighting designs. He was born in Paris and trained as a metalsmith before serving in World War I. After the war, he established his own workshop in Paris and began creating lighting fixtures.
Perzel's designs were characterized by their simplicity, elegance, and functionality. He was particularly known for his use of glass and metal, and he developed a unique method of bonding glass and metal together to create sleek and modern lighting fixtures. He also used a variety of other materials in his designs, including wood, leather, and parchment.
One of Perzel's most famous designs is the "Modèle 1" lamp, which he created in 1927. The Modèle 1 is a minimalist table lamp with a simple metal base and a frosted glass shade that emits a soft, diffused light. It quickly became a classic of French design and was followed by a series of other innovative lighting designs.
Perzel's work was highly influential in the development of modernist design in France, and he was admired by many of his contemporaries, including Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand. His designs continue to be highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts around the world, and his workshop in Paris still produces lighting fixtures using his original techniques and designs.
