Kips Bay Decorator Show House
Photography by Steve Freihon
Gallery Entry and Lower Grand Staircase
One of my fondest childhood memories is chasing peacocks around my grandparent’s property. As an adult, I have spent hours looking at art in house museums across the world, and this is the lens from which I design. When approaching the concept for the Gallery Entry and Lower Grand Staircase of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House, my inspiration sprang from these three great loves: peacocks, art and design.
Lord Frederic Leighton’s House in London and James McNeill Whistler’s iconic “Peacock Room” immediately came to mind when I started to plan the space. Both represent the magnus opus in interiors of the Aesthetic Movement of the late 19th century.
It is extremely important for me to welcome guests into the Gallery Entry of The Kips Bay Decorator Show House in a similar atmosphere—with colorful and moody spaces inspired by these late 19th century homes, but with a truly contemporary twist.
This is achieved by the rich palette of deep and luminous blues and greens, coupled with metallic gold and silver; and organic motifs in the Japanese style that have been deconstructed for a chic 21st century sensibility. The sophisticated coloration of walls, fabrics, rug, furniture and decorating details works to form a cohesive and stylish modern space—one that is relevant and appreciated today.
