A fine period George III bowfront Hepplewhite mahogany sideboard. An imposing piece, featuring marquetry inlaid sunray corners, featherbanded drawer fronts with curved satinwood string inlay, finely cast brass lion-head ring pulls and vividly grained mahogany show-wood throughout. Deep top over bowed and scalloped apron with center cutlery drawer and two flanking deep cabinet doors, one with two slide-out trays, standing on tapered square section legs ending in spade feet. Miguel Canals (1925–1995) was a Spanish painter from Barcelona who painted in the style of 17th century Spanish painters such as Tomás Hiepes. The composition includes birds, cherries, Delft bowls, and hydrangeas, and the elaborate giltwood and ebonized frame is in the 17th century Spanish style. $18,000

Exhibition Knife

England, made by J. Y. Oliver (working dates 1780–1795), circa 1780–1795. Steel, silver, brass, imitation ivory. Stand: Mahogany, brass H: 10.375  W: 7  D: 2.625 inches; Stand: L: 12.25  W: 8.625  H: 1.75 inches. Complex knife assemblies were made for exhibition in England to display the skills of knife and watchmakers. This magnificent example was made by Cambridge clockmaker J. Y. Oliver and contains 400 knives, each signed by the maker “J.Y. Oliver #121” surrounding a brass clock with beautiful scrollwork appliques and engravings. The movement is also signed by Oliver.
