Osvaldo Borsani

Italian, 1911 - 1985

Osvaldo Borsani studied architecture at Accademia di Brera in Milan, and Politecnico di Milano and during this time became involved in his father’s cabinetry business. His education exposed him to the modernist movement’s rapid rise in Europe in the late 1920s. In 1932 the family business opened a space in Milan and was renamed Arredamento Borsani. The renamed company began focusing on bringing modernism to Italy, with a high level of artisanal craftsmanship and materials. In 1953, Osvaldo Borsani co-founded the Italian furniture manufacturing company Tecno with his twin brother. Tecno's main objective was engineering innovative design solutions. Their most well-known creations include the D70 sofa, which folds into a divan bed, and the P40 adjustable lounge chair. Though at first, Tecno only produced Osvaldo Borsani furniture designs, eventually the company produced the work of other legendary designers, such as Gio PontiMario BelliniRobert Mango, Eugenio Gerli and Vico Magistretti.
