Arts & Crafts Exhibition about Karl von Rydingsvard
The exhibition "Flowers & Monsters: Hand-Carved Furniture by Karl von Rydingsvard," is on display at the American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, through the end of December 2016. This is the first time this group of furniture has been on exhibit, and demonstrates the Swedish-born craftsman's integration of his native Swedish mythology into the Arts & Crafts aesthetic. Moving to New York and then Boston in the early 1900s, Von Rydingsvard fulfilled commissions for American industrialists and established schools in Manhattan and Brunswick, Maine, to teach young women how to carve; he also taught at Columbia, RISD, and at the School at the MFA, Boston. Initially a collaboration with the late Robert Edwards, a scholar of the Arts & Crafts and of Von Rydingsvard, the exhibition was spearheaded by the museum's senior curator Carrie Hogan.
